Beware of Malicious APK: “Govt Schemes J&K Bank” Targeting Users
Srinagar, March 31: A senior police officer has issued a warning about a dangerous APK file titled “Govt Schemes J&K Bank” that is being circulated on social media messaging apps. This malicious software poses a serious threat to users’ banking credentials, WhatsApp accounts, and overall device security.
According to the officer, cybercriminals are using this APK to lure victims into downloading it, falsely claiming that it provides access to government schemes and banking benefits. However, once installed, the app can:
Steal sensitive banking details, including login credentials and OTPs.
Hijack WhatsApp accounts, potentially spreading malware to contacts.
Gain access to personal data, leading to identity theft and financial fraud.
Authorities have urged people to avoid downloading or sharing such APKs and to verify official information only through trusted sources such as government websites and the official J&K Bank portal.
We advise the public to stay vigilant. Do not install any apps from unverified sources and report any suspicious links immediately,” the officer told ANN News.
Cyber experts also recommend keeping devices updated, using strong passwords, and enabling two-factor authentication for additional security. If anyone has already downloaded the APK, they should immediately uninstall it, reset their device, and change their banking credentials.
