NC MLA to Move Privilege Motion Against J&K Waqf Chairperson Over Eidgah Pulpit Inauguration

Srinagar, March 29, 2025: The ruling National Conference (NC) has announced its decision to move a privilege motion in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly against Waqf Board chairperson and BJP leader Darakhshan Andrabi for allegedly sidelining elected representatives in the inauguration of the new pulpit (‘mimber’) at Srinagar’s historic Eidgah. The event, held on Friday, March 28, has sparked a political controversy, with NC MLA Mubarak Gul terming it a violation of established protocols.

“The Waqf Board’s failure to involve the local MLA in the inauguration, despite the project being located in his constituency, is deeply concerning. Such unilateral actions not only flout established norms but also disrespect the sentiments of the local population,” said Mubarak Gul, a former Speaker of the Assembly. He confirmed his intention to submit a privilege motion against the Waqf Board.

The newly inaugurated pulpit, located in the sprawling 600-kanal Eidgah ground, is the largest in Jammu and Kashmir. The site holds significant religious and cultural importance, hosting special prayers, including the Eid namaz, over the years. The Waqf Board’s decision to proceed with the inauguration without involving local elected representatives has drawn sharp criticism.

Adding to the controversy, the name plaque installed at the site mentioned only Ms. Andrabi and two lower-level officials, including an engineer and Tehsildar Ishtiyaq Mohiuddin. Notably absent were the names of mainstream political leaders or elected legislators, who were neither invited to the event nor acknowledged for their roles.

Speaking on the matter, Mubarak Gul stressed the importance of respecting the contributions and roles of elected representatives in such public projects. “The exclusion of the local MLA sends a message of disregard to the democratic institutions and people they represent,” he added.

Ms. Andrabi, however, defended the inauguration, emphasizing that the project was a Waqf Board initiative, executed under the guidelines extended to Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370 and the application of the Central Waqf Board rules in 2019 under the J&K Reorganisation Act.

The issue has reignited debates about the balance of power between elected representatives and administrative authorities in the region. The NC has called for greater accountability and consultation in decision-making processes involving public projects.

With the privilege motion expected to be submitted soon, this controversy is likely to dominate the upcoming Assembly session, underscoring the growing tensions between political parties and administrative bodies in Jammu and Kashmir.
