Timber smuggling bid foiled in Pulwama, two arrested

Pulwama, Mar 27: Acting on specific and reliable information regarding illegal transportation of forest timber, Pulwama Police laid a naka at Gabalpora to intercept the movement of smugglers operating from Shopian towards Pulwama.

During the operation, a group of persons carrying timber on horses was spotted. On noticing the police presence, some individuals attempted to flee from the spot; however, two persons identified as Javaid Ahmad Wagay S/o Abdul Khalik Wagay R/o Nardpora, Shopian and Mehraj Ahmad S/o Mohd Asim Zargar R/o Drach, Rajpora, Pulwama were apprehended on the spot, while others managed to escape taking advantage of the terrain.

During the operation, twelve timber logs along with two horses used for transportation were taken into custody.

In this regard, a case FIR No. 42/2026 under Section 26 of the Forest Act and Section 302(ii) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered at Police Station Rajpora, and further investigation has been initiated to identify and apprehend the other involved persons.
