Nationalism: A Tale of Sacrifice for Some and Comfort for Others

Tariq Bhat {Opinion}

In the heart of every soldier lies a sense of duty, a commitment to protect the nation’s sovereignty, even at the cost of their own lives. The jawans of our security forces brave harsh conditions, face hostile enemies, and sacrifice their lives on the borders to safeguard the integrity of our country.

For them, nationalism is not just a word—it’s a mission that demands the ultimate price. Yet, in stark contrast, the realm of politics often tells a different story, one where personal gain and the pursuit of power overshadow the ideals of national service.

The political scenario, especially in regions like Kashmir, is undergoing significant changes, raising concerns among many citizens.

While our soldiers are out there on the front lines, facing bullets and hostile environments, many politicians are indulging in luxuries, far removed from the harsh realities faced by those who serve. The perception of nationalism, it seems, has been hijacked by those in power for their own agendas. It’s disheartening to see politicians, who often lack the educational qualifications of those they govern, wielding authority over highly educated officers, like those in the IAS and KAS.

These officers, who have spent years in rigorous study and training, find themselves at the mercy of leaders whose qualifications are often limited to political connections and not merit.

This disconnection between the sacrifices of the armed forces and the actions of politicians is a growing concern. As the political landscape in Kashmir shifts, the focus seems to be on power and position rather than genuine service to the nation. Politicians, some of whom have never set foot in a college, hold the reins of power and influence over bureaucrats who have dedicated their lives to public service.

The uneducated politicians often dictate terms, making decisions that impact the lives of the very officers who are the backbone of our administrative system.

There is a growing belief that nationalism has become a one-sided affair, limited to the forces and agencies that are directly involved in the defense of the nation.

For politicians, it appears to be a convenient tool to rally support and maintain power, but without the genuine sacrifice that comes with it. This disparity raises important questions about the true meaning of service to the nation and who really bears the burden of patriotism.

As the political scenario in  country evolves, it’s crucial for the public to remain vigilant and question the motivations of those in power. Nationalism should not be a mere slogan or a tool for political gain; it should be a shared responsibility, encompassing all who claim to serve the nation.

The sacrifices of our security forces should not be in vain, nor should they be exploited for political advantage. It’s time to bridge the gap between the belt forces who embody the spirit of nationalism and the politicians who, more often than not, prioritize their own interests over the nation’s well-being.
