IUST organized Drug De-addiction Programme under Nasha Mukth Bharat Abhiyan

 

Srinagar: IUST’s constituent college, Alamdar Memorial College of Nursing and Medical Technology, Charari-Sharief Budgam on Wednesday conducted awareness programme, under Nasha Mukth Bharat Abhiyan, in collaboration with Drug De-addiction centre SMHS Srinagar.

The programme was conducted to sensitize the youth about the harmful effects of drug abuse, & was held under the guidance of Prof. (A) Ms. Asmat Parveen, Principal Nursing colleges of IUST here in Srinagar.

The programme was conducted in the premises of Government Drug De-addiction Centre SMHS Srinagar, and was attended by the inpatients, outpatients, hospital visitors, hospital staff and nursing students of Alamdar College of nursing charar-i-sharief Budgam.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. (A) Ms. Asmat Parveen, Principal Nursing colleges of IUST stressed that the Kashmir Valley is slowly becoming India’s drug hub.

She said that, “Over 33 thousand syringes are used to inject heroin by drug abusers in the Valley on a daily basis, & 90 percent of drug abusers are using heroin while the rest are using cocaine, brown sugar, and marijuana.”

She further said that, “For the first time we are seeing Injection Heroin as the main substance user, previously we used to see painkiller and cannabis users. ”

”It has been revealed that most of the drug abusers are in the age group of 17-33 years. Unemployed youth are one of the main consumers of these drugs. And the number of drug abusers in the valley has crossed 67000, while 33000 are injected heroin using syringes,” She added.

Tabashir Bashir, Teaching faculty AMCONMT, stressed on the need to sensitise the people about the bad effects of drug addiction, adding that the students have to play a pivotal role to curb this menace which has grabbed the whole world.

He said that the main objective of organizing this awareness programme was to reach out to masses and spread awareness about the impact of drug abuse on the individuals as well as on the society.

Syed Shahid, teaching faculty AMCONMT, spoke in detail on different aspects of narcotics & addiction and other important aspects related to drug abuse.

He reiterated that drug abuse has become a major social concern and youth are at a very vulnerable end and can fall in its trap anytime and urged upon parents to pay more attention towards children and take proactive steps to prevent them from falling prey to the disaster of drug addiction.

Furthermore,the students spoke on various modes of drug addiction, causes, consequences and preventive measures of drug addiction.

The administration of DDC appreciated the awareness campaign started by the students of Alamdar college of nursing and urged the Department to hold more such interactive sessions in future as well.
