Yuvraj Singh Announces Retirement From International Cricket

New Delhi: Senior Indian batsman and one of the finest cricketers to have played white-ball cricket, Yuvraj Singh, on Monday announced his retirement from international cricket.

The Punjab cricketer held a press conference in Mumbai where he announced his decision to hang his boots from all formats of the game.

The event started with a short film where Yuvraj described his journey with his father Yograj – who was very strict when it came to training his son.

“It’s time to say good bye and walk away. It was a beautiful story, but it has come to an end,” says #YuvrajSingh in a short film being played at the Mumbai event where he has called for a press conference.

Yuvraj made his debut in 2000 Champions Trophy against Kenya – where he did not get to bat in his maiden match in the 50-over format.

However, in the next match against Australia, the flamboyant left-hander made an immediate impact as he scored a well-crafted 80-ball 84 against Australia.

Yuvraj also showed his prowess in the field as he first took a brilliant catch to dismiss Ian Harvey and followed it with a direct hit to remove the dangerous Michael Bevan.

It was the start of a prolific career as Yuvraj went on to represent India in 304 ODIs, 58 T20Is and 40 Tests. One of the biggest highlights of Yuvraj’s career was India’s title-winning campaign in 2011 World Cup.

Yuvraj produced an all-rounder effort and was adjudged Man of the Match for his performances.

Soon after the World Cup, Yuvraj was diagnosed with cancer – which he battled past successfully and also made a comeback in the Indian team. However, since his cancer treatment, he never looked like the cricketer he once used to be.

Yuvraj resumed his cricketing duties in 2013 but struggled with consistency. He last donned the coloured jersey on June 30, 2017 in a match against West Indies where he scored 39 runs off 55 balls.

He was recently a part of Mumbai Indians in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 – where the Rohit Sharma-led franchise had bought him at the last minute. Yuvraj was benched after playing four games.

Yuvraj also represented Delhi Daredevils,  Kings XI Punjab,  Pune Warriors,  Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
