Speaking to reporters, Wajeeha Tahir said her husband consumed wine and became violent, claiming he lost the ability to distinguish between right and wrong while intoxicated. She alleged that during the argument, he struck her with a wine bottle and made abusive remarks, including derogatory comments about Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir.

According to her statement, the argument escalated after her husband repeatedly discussed speeches made at the Ulema Conference, where Hafiz Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi had, just days earlier, publicly praised the Pakistan Army Chief and the role of the military leadership. Wajeeha said the contrast between those remarks and her husband’s behavior at home led to a heated confrontation.

Ashrafi, who is the chairman of the Pakistan Ulema Council, has previously been at the center of controversy after a video allegedly showing him in an intoxicated state during a live television debate on Pakistan Television went viral. He had denied the allegations at the time, saying the clip was misleading.

Women’s rights activists have condemned the alleged assault and renewed calls for stronger action against domestic violence and substance abuse, stressing that such incidents often remain unreported.

Police officials said they could not immediately confirm whether a formal complaint had been registered, adding that any allegation of domestic abuse is investigated under existing law.

The incident has sparked debate on social media about alcohol use, public religious discourse, and how political and religious narratives can spill over into private lives.
