‘Torture’ Of Militant’s Sister: DGP Assures Action If Anybody Found Guilty

Jammu: Director general of police Dilbag Singh said on Monday that action would be taken if somebody has been harassed “unnecessarily”.

He was commenting on reports of alleged harassment of a sister of a militant by the police. The allegations of harassment surfaced after former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti took to twitter and asked the government to refrain from dragging militants’ families into the “war against militancy”, following her visit to a family of a militant in Pulwama.

“There is a very thin line between questioning and harassment. Every story always has two sides. It’s how you look at this issue. When you pick up somebody and question him, you encroach upon somebody’s personal liberty but at the same7 time you have to see whether you can do your duty without questioning him,” the DGP told reporters during an interaction.

“If you don’t follow due procedure for investigation of militancy-related incidents, you cannot go beyond certain points and would be unable to curb it,” he said.

He, however, added that such complaints against the police have been received—and investigated—in the past also after following proper procedure.

“We are looking into it and if it is established that somebody unnecessarily harassed someone we will surely take action,” he said.
