Terrorist numbers reduced to 80; will see further decline: GOC Rajiv Ghai

Srinagar, Oct 03 : Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Indian Army’s 15 Corps, announced a significant reduction in the number of active terrorists in Kashmir, now standing at approximately 80—a substantial decline from previous years.

Speaking at a press conference in Srinagar, he expressed optimism that this number would continue to decrease, highlighting that the situation in Kashmir is currently peaceful, with heightened vigilance along the borders.

Lt. Gen. Ghai attributed the success in counter-terrorism operations to the coordinated efforts of the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and other security agencies, which have brought peace and stability to the region, leading to substantial development. He stated that the region is “under the cusp of a new beginning.”

Regarding infiltration attempts from across the Line of Control (LoC), Gen. Ghai emphasized the effectiveness of the counter-infiltration grid, noting that no major infiltration attempts were observed during the summer. He further remarked that cross-border forces continue to fuel terrorism but acknowledged that no active recruitment has occurred over the past year and a half, marking a major achievement.

While he praised the improving security situation over the last two years, Lt. Gen. Ghai cautioned that maintaining peace remains the primary challenge, and vigilance must be maintained, particularly in counter-terrorism efforts at the LoC and within the valley.

He also addressed the recent tragic encounter in Kokernag, where Indian Army Colonel and Deputy Superintendent of Police Humayun Bhat were martyred, acknowledging their bravery during the operation. Gen. Ghai estimated that between 25 and 30 foreign militants remain active, and the army is determined to neutralize them soon.

The GOC reiterated the importance of the February 2021 ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, which has reduced tensions along the LoC. Concluding with a message of hope, he expressed confidence that terrorism will continue to decline, bringing lasting peace to Kashmir. (KNS)
