Symposium on ‘Drug De-addiction’ held at GDC Nowshera
RAJOURI, FEBRUARY 05: Government Degree College Nowshera, in collaboration with District Social Welfare Department, organized a symposium on ‘Drug De-addiction’.
The programme was conducted as a part of awareness campaign being organized in various institutions of District Rajouri under “ Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan”.
This Abhiyaan is being conducted by United Nations Development Programme across 272 Districts of the Country where the Drug abuse is at its peak.
Before the start of the symposium, the Central Monitoring Team of UNDP interacted with the college students for collecting feedback at ground level for the implementation of schemes under “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan.”
The programme started with a welcome address by Dr. Surinder Kumar, Principal of the College. He formally welcomed the Chief Guest, G.L. Sharma, ASP Nowshera and other guests, Rahul Puri, Tehsil Social Welfare Officer (Nowshera); Dr. Sumit Bakshi, MO Manjakote and representatives of UNDP, Anand and Zeeshan.
The Principal highlighted the harmful effects of drugs and motivated the students to stay away from these substances. He said that the main aim of organizing such events is to spread awareness among the students and prevent the young generation from indulging in drug addiction.
A large number of students and staff attended the programme, while 17 students expressed their views about the drug abuse, its harmful effects and illicit drug trafficking.
Prof. Gurjeet Singh recited a poem in Punjabi and Prof. Inam Ul Haq presented a Nazam based on drug abuse.
The UNDP representative also expressed his thoughts on this social evil. He elaborated how the marketing companies are selling their products under the brand names which are associated with drug substances.
The Resource Person of the programme, Dr. Sumit Bakshi delivered an elaborated lecture on the topic through a PPT. He talked in detail about the various types of drugs, their harmful effects and the different health problems associated with consumption of drugs. He also stressed upon the need for change especially behavioral change to get out of the vicious cycle of drug addiction. He also talked about the role of rehabilitation centers.
At last, the Chief Guest, G.L. Sharma motivated the students to stay away from the drugs and get involved in some constructive activities like Games & Sports, Yoga and Meditation.
At the end, Prize distribution ceremony was held. Top 5 participants were rewarded with Mementos. Adil Manhas (B.Sc. Sem.3) stood Ist; Inderpaul Kour (B.A. Sem.5) secured 2nd Position ; Hardev Singh (B.A. Sem5) was awarded 3rd Prize; Shreya Gumble (B.A Sem.3) stood at 4th Position and the 5th Position was clinched by Sanjana Sharma (B.Sc. 3) .
The event was adjudged by Prof. Joginder Singh, Prof. Sanjay Kumar and Prof. Gurjeet Singh. The programme ended with a vote of thanks presented by Prof. Joginder Singh (HOD Physics)
