Steel Bullets Used By Militants During The Anantnag Attack Worry Authorities
New Delhi: The investigation into the June 12 militant attack against the CRPF revealed that militants used steel bullets made in China to seriously injure security personnel. Steel bullets pierced the jawans’ bulletproof vests, causing them injury.
In retaliation for the attack, a joint team of Jammu and Kashmir police and the CRPF killed a militant and recovered an AK 47 rifle. Steel bullets were also recovered on the spot.
The investigation into the attack revealed that the Pakistani group ISI and the militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad had provided steel bullets to militants in Jammu and Kashmir to target security and defense personnel. The purpose of these bullets, which were made in China, is to pierce the bullet-proof vests.
Investigative agencies estimate that militants used steel bullets during militant attacks in Pulwama and Tral. Jaish-e-Mohammad used the same bullets in all major anti-Indian operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
Steel bullets can be used in AK 47 rifles and two to three of them can be kept in one magazine at a time.
In an attack on December 27, 2017, militants affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammad first used steel bullets. It was for the first time during this attack that the Indian forces discovered this mode of operation of the militants.
The Indian authorities consider this a serious problem. Bulletproof vehicles are used for VIP security and when issuing steel bullets or armored bullets, the authorities feel the need to review all VIP security scenarios.
The authorities believe that steel bullets were provided to militants in Jammu and Kashmir by Noor Mohammad Tantre alias Peer Baba, a member of Jaish-e-Mohammad, who was killed during an encounter with Indian forces in December 2018.
Although there is a global ban on such bullets, it is disturbing that militants have access to them.
