Srinagar Police, Food Safety Department Conduct Joint Raids; Rotten Meat Destroyed
Srinagar, Aug 11 — In a major crackdown on the sale of unhygienic and expired meat, Srinagar Police and the Food Safety Department carried out joint raids at multiple locations across the city, targeting vendors involved in supplying substandard products.
During the operation, large quantities of rotten meat were seized and destroyed on the spot under relevant provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act.
In one such action, police teams, in collaboration with officials from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), raided a cold storage unit in Parimpora where decomposed meat was found stored. The meat was seized, and the cold storage facility was sealed under the applicable sections of the Food Safety and Standards Act.
Officials said the raids are part of an intensified campaign to protect public health and enforce strict adherence to food safety regulations.
Acting on credible intelligence received at Police Station Zakoora, authorities identified Ab Hameed Kuchay, a resident of Soura and operator of Sunshine Foods at SICOP Zakoora, as a key suspect. He is alleged to have conspired with Arif Ahmad Shah, a resident of Baghat Barzulla, to supply large quantities of decomposed, unfit-for-consumption meat to restaurants and hotels across Srinagar.
Police stated that this deliberate act of distributing rotten meat poses a serious threat to public health and constitutes a grave offence under the law.
Accordingly, FIR No. 48/2025 has been registered at Police Station Zakoora under Sections 271, 275, and 61(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation is in progress.
Srinagar Police assured that inspections and legal actions will continue in collaboration with concerned departments to ensure accountability and compliance across the city’s food supply chain, safeguarding public health.
