SMC’s tenure to end tomorrow, delay in ULB polls violation of constitutional rights: DY Mayor

Srinagar, Nov 04  : Deputy Mayor of Srinagar, Parvez Ahmad Qadri, Saturday expressed displeasure over the delay in conducting Urban Local Body (ULB) polls in the region.

Qadri while addressing the news conference here, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said that the term of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is set to conclude tomorrow. He said the delay in conducting the elections has raised questions about the government’s commitment to democratic processes.

He further added that during the reorganization act, the constitutional amendment was clearly specified, which stated that the Delimitation Commission, along with the Election Commission, should conduct the election before the tenure ends.

“However, despite SMC’s term concluding tomorrow, no elections have been held, which is a violation of constitutional rights,” he said.

“One fails to understand if the constitutional amendment clearly shows the tenure, why the elections were not conducted here,” Deputy Mayor said—(KNO)
