“Reopen Pahalgam Route, End Public Hardships”: Mehbooba Mufti Flags Tourism Loss, Fuel Shortage in South Kashmir
Anantnag, Apr 1 : Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday appealed to the Lieutenant Governor to reopen the Bijbhera–Langanbal–Pahalgam road, stating that its closure has severely impacted tourism and livelihoods in the area.
Speaking to reporters, as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, Mehbooba said several delegations from Pahalgam raised concerns over the continued closure of key tourist spots including Chandanwari and local parks, which has led to a sharp decline in visitor footfall.
She said that many people have invested heavily in building resorts along the route, and reopening the road with adequate security arrangements would help revive economic activity and provide relief to those dependent on tourism.
Highlighting other concerns, Mehbooba alleged shortage of petrol and LPG in certain areas, claiming that people are facing difficulties in accessing fuel despite official claims of adequate supply.
She also raised issues related to mining restrictions, stating that poor workers transporting material in tractors and tempos are being penalised, adding to their financial distress.
The PDP chief further expressed concern over low wages of private school teachers and assured that the matter would be taken up in the next session, including the possibility of introducing a bill for better pay and social security benefits.
She also called for regularisation of daily wagers across various departments, noting that many have served for decades and are nearing retirement without job security. (KNC)
