Rajbagh Fire victim rebut ‘bogus compensation’ claim by councilor, Mayor deletes ‘appreciation tweet’

Srinagar, Dec 17: Fire victim of Aramwari Rajbagh Saturday rebutted the ‘fake claims’ of corporator wherein later had claimed that cheques worth Rs 40,000 were given to each fire victim.

On 10 December, this year, a pharmaceutical store was gutted and at least three residential-cum-commercial buildings and a hotel were damaged in a blaze in Rajbagh area.

Corporator Bhat Shaheen tweeted that she was thankful to Srinagar Mayor Juniad Azim Matto who made it possible to provide cheques of Rs 40,000 to each fire victim.

The tweet was retweeted by SMC Mayor with the quote “Well done Shaheena Ji.”

However, this tweeted stoked controversy after the Rajbagh fire victims rebutted the claim and tweeted that “Cheques worth Rs 5,000 were only given to each fire victim.” The rebuttal tweet by fire victims forced the Mayor to delete his ‘appreciation tweet.’

The corporator in an effort to control the damage tweeted “I would like to clarify that cheque for Rs 5000/ house hold was given and Rs 5000 worth blankets, mattresses, bedsheet kitchen utensils etc were distributed which makes it worth 10000 per house hold and four houses holds its Rs 40,000. No misunderstandings nothing intentional plz (sic)”

The fire victims have appealed to the administration to initiate the probe in the matter.
