Qureshi wins UT Badminton Championship, qualifies for North Zone
Srinagar, August 23: Ibrahim Bin Ajaz Qureshi has won the Jammu & Kashmir Badminton Championship defeating Bhavdeep Singh from district Jammu in two straight sets by 21-19 and 21-15.
Ibrahim has become the first player from Kashmir region to win many state championships in different age categories continuously from the past many years.
All J&K Union Territory level Senior and Junior Ranking Badminton Championship was organised by the Badminton Association of Jammu and Kashmir at Indoor Badminton Hall MA Stadium. Various matches were organised in different categories under the supervision of the expert coaches.
In Women singles, Unnati Jaral lost to Skiedeep Kour in the finals, while in Women doubles, Krishika and Shambhavi beat Vaishnavi and Rupal in the finals, besides in Mixed doubles, Vipul and Unnati lost to Akshay and Rupal in the finals and in Boys doubles -19, Abhijit and Sehdev beat Ojas Suri and Thakur Ayush in the finals.
In Men’s doubles, Raghav and Manish beat Aryan and Ravdeep, while Vipul Saini and Nakul lost to Akshay and Bhavya in the semifinals.
Pertinently, Kashmir region has no separate badminton hall with proper wooden flooring and synthetic court. Ibrahim still has proved his mettle by emerging winner in such prestigious state events where players participate after attending top coaching camps of the country.
While talking to media persons after winning the state championship, Ibrahim requested sports authorities to make main Indoor stadium Srinagar functional immediately for badminton players which was inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

“The North Zone National competition was scheduled from 2nd week of September 2022 in Srinagar but due to non-availability of synthetic badminton courts, venue has been shifted to Jammu’ he said.
“Shifting is disappointing as Srinagar was chosen as the venue for North Zone for the first time in the history of badminton. We request LG that a separate badminton Court be made available for us with at least one SAI Coach for badminton players of Kashmir division,” he added.
