Police lodges FIR after man allegedly announce Tripple Talaq to her wife in Kupwara

Kupwara: The first case under the triple talaq law was registered in North Kashmir’s Kupwara on Saturday against a man who allegedly gave talaq to his wife.

According to reports the case was registered against Rafaqat Ahmad Lone resident of Mundya Nagam in Keran Kupwara after her wife approached a local court.

Police said that the FIR was registered on the complaint of one Tahira Begum wherein she stated that she got married few years back and her husband pronounced talaq three times.

A senior police officer, said that a case under section 4 of The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act 2019 is registered against Lone.

Notably under section 4 of the new act — passed by Parliament on July 30 — a Muslim husband who pronounces triple talaq is liable to be punished by imprisonment up to three years and fine.

The police officer also said that the case has been registered on the directions of court and domestic valiance has been also lodged against the Lone two months back.

Earlier, an FIR no. 24/2020 u/s 498A IPC pertaining to Domestic Violence was also registered in this matter and challaned before the  Court on 31/12/20.which is under trial hearing the court has directed to given the Triple Talaq FIR, the officer added.
