Picnic Vehicle Falls Into Gorge Near Peer Ki Gali On Mughal Road

9 girls among 11 students killed, 7 injured in mishap

Srinagar: Eleven students, nine of them girls, were killed and seven others were injured after an excursion (vehicle) Tempo Traveller they were on board skidded off the road near Peer Ki Gali along Mughal road in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Thursday.

Reports reaching GNS said that a vehicle—Tempo traveler— overturned and fell into gorge, leading to on the spot death of four students and injuries to eighteen others. The students were from a private computer centre at Surankote.

Soon after the mishap, locals and police launched a rescue operation and evacuated all the injured to District Hospital Shopian where seven of them were declared brought dead on arrival, he said.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Shopian Mohammad Saleem Malik confirmed death of 11 persons and injuries to seven others who he said have been shifted to SMHS hospital.

The officer identified the injured as Nayeema (25) daughter of Reyaz Ahmad of Faisalabad, Tabasum (23) daughter of Mohammad Rafiq of Faisalabad, Shereen Fatima (24) daughter of Zaman Ahmad of Lathoon, Afshana Kownsar(23) of Darbah, Humaira Qazmi (25) of Dundak, Rehmat Bee (23) of Dundak, Najma (20) of Lassana, Shabnum (22) of Gunthal, Rabia (20) of Gunthal, Jameel Ahmad (24) of Mandi and Suhail Ahmad (20) of Gunthal.

He identified the injured as Aliya (20) daughter of Mohd Iqbal of Surankote, Tabasum (21) daughter of Bashir Ahmad, Soniya (22) daughter of Mohd Rafiq of Faisalabad, Tazeem Akther (25) daughter of Abdul Rashid, Jameel Ahmad (21) son of Abdul Rehman of Surankote, Mehrun Nisa (20) and Afshana Javid (24).

All the injured persons were later referred to SMHS hospital here in Srinagar where condition of two among them is said to be critical, ADC said.

After conducting all the legal formalities the bodies of the deceased were handed over to their respective legal heirs for last rites, the officer said.

A police officer said that a case under relevant sections of law has been registered and further investigations initiated in this regard.

Meanwhile, Governor Satya Pal Malik has expressed grief over the loss of lives in the road mishap.

In a condolence message, Governor has conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families and prayed for peace to the departed souls.

Governor has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of the kin of the deceased.

Governor directed the administration to provide best medical treatment to the injured in the accident and wished speedy recovery to them. (GNS)
