Another Life Lost, Another Tragedy We Could Have Prevented…

In the past two months, we’ve seen a heartbreaking rise in drowning incidents involving young boys. Sadly, today we witnessed yet another tragedy. While many are quick to blame the parents, from my perspective, both children and parents share responsibility—and so does society at large.

A family outing ended in heartbreak on Sunday evening as four members of a Srinagar-based family drowned in the River Jhelum near the NHPC Canal at Gantmulla area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

According to official sources, the family was enjoying a picnic by the riverside when two children accidentally slipped into the water. In a desperate attempt to save them, two more family members jumped into the river—but were also swept away by the strong currents.

A local civilian who witnessed the incident acted swiftly and managed to rescue one individual. However, despite efforts, one minor was found dead, while two other family members—reportedly including another child and an adult—remain missing.

The rescued individual was rushed to Boniyar Hospital for immediate medical attention and medico-legal formalities, officials confirmed.

A large-scale search and rescue operation has been launched involving the local police, SDRF (State Disaster Response Force), and community volunteers.

Speaking to ANN News, SHO Boniyar confirmed the tragic incident and said, “The operation is ongoing with all resources deployed to locate the missing individuals. The identities of the victims are currently being verified.”

This incident is the latest in a series of drowning tragedies reported over the past two months across Jammu and Kashmir, raising serious concerns about the safety of recreational spots and the need for greater public awareness and vigilance.

Authorities once again urge parents and guardians to remain alert near water bodies, and call upon citizens to intervene or notify police whenever unsupervised children are spotted in or around such dangerous areas.
