Pakistan’s jailed ex-Premier Khan files papers to run for Oxford University chancellorship

ANN NEWS DESK

Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, has officially entered the race to become the Chancellor of Oxford University.

Despite his imprisonment, Khan has submitted an application for the election, which will be held in October to replace the outgoing Chancellor, Chris Patten.

The role of Chancellor at Oxford is largely ceremonial but carries significant influence, including chairing the committee that appoints the Vice-Chancellor and involvement in fundraising and advocacy efforts for the university. Other notable candidates include Elish Angiolini and Margaret Casely-Hayford, both of whom could become the first female Chancellor in Oxford’s history, as well as potential candidates like Peter Mandelson and William Hague.

The election will take place online from October 28, and only Oxford graduates and university staff are eligible to vote.
