Omar Abdullah Promotes Public-Friendly Governance, Bans VIP Traffic Stoppages

Limya Mahajan

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has taken a significant step towards public-friendly governance by directing the state police to eliminate “green corridors” and traffic stoppages for his convoy. This move aims to minimize public inconvenience and reduce disruptions caused by VIP movements on public roads.

In a tweet, Abdullah expressed his commitment to ensuring that the public is not disrupted by the frequent travel of politicians and officials. He stated, “I have spoken to the DG @JmuKmrPolice that there is to be no ‘green corridor’ or traffic stoppage when I move anywhere by road. I have instructed him to minimize public inconvenience, and the use of sirens is to be minimal.”

The Chief Minister further emphasized the importance of a respectful approach by police officials, urging them to avoid aggressive gestures, such as stick-waving, while managing traffic during VIP movements. This directive also extends to Abdullah’s entire cabinet, as he encourages his colleagues to adopt a similar approach.

“We are here to serve the people and not to inconvenience them,” Abdullah remarked, highlighting the need for a government that is accessible and accountable to its citizens.

The announcement has resonated well with the public, who often face delays and interruptions due to the movement of VIPs. Many have praised Abdullah’s leadership and sense of responsibility toward the people of Jammu and Kashmir, viewing this initiative as a refreshing change in governance.

This decision not only reflects Abdullah’s commitment to reducing the gap between the government and the people but also sets a potential precedent for other states to follow. By discouraging excessive sirens and aggressive traffic control measures, the Chief Minister reinforces the message that those in power should prioritize the well-being of ordinary citizens.

As a result, residents of Jammu and Kashmir can look forward to fewer road disruptions, with Abdullah leading by example in fostering a more accessible and people-oriented governance model.
