Netanyahu ‘Out of Control’ After Israeli Strikes in Syria Spark Anger Within Trump Administration
Senior officials at the White House have expressed growing concern this week over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions, following a series of Israeli airstrikes in Syria. These strikes are believed to have heightened tensions between Washington and Tel Aviv, raising fears about the stability of the region.
Netanyahu’s conduct has reportedly been described by U.S. officials as “reckless” and even “mad,” with concerns that his moves could undermine President Trump’s efforts to bring peace and stability to the Middle East.
Tensions escalated sharply on Tuesday when Israeli jets bombed a convoy of Syrian army tanks near the city of Sweida. The convoy was said to be en route to control violent clashes between Druze militias and armed Bedouin tribes. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, more than 700 people had already been killed in the fighting by Saturday.
The Israeli military claimed that the convoy had entered a demilitarized zone in southern Syria and that the Syrian army was involved in attacks against the Druze minority. This claim was strongly denied by Damascus. While U.S. envoy Thomas Brock had urged Israeli counterparts to pursue a diplomatic path and initially received assurances of restraint, Israel later intensified its airstrikes.
By Wednesday, bombs were reportedly dropped near Syrian military headquarters and the presidential palace in Damascus.
The escalation is said to have stunned President Trump and top officials. A senior U.S. source said the President does not like watching bombs fall on countries where peace efforts are underway. The Trump administration had recently announced plans to assist in Syria’s reconstruction.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly told Netanyahu and his advisers on Wednesday that the attacks must stop immediately.
