NCC girls unit inaugurated at NIT Srinagar

Srinagar, Nov 11: To propagate national unity and integrity amongst students, the National Cadet Corps (NCC’s) girls unit was formally launched at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Friday.

The function was presided over by the Commanding Officer of 1 J&K Girls Battalion, while Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. (Dr.) Rakesh Sehgal and Institute’s Registrar Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari and Dean Research and Consultancy (R&C) NIT Srinagar, Prof. M F Wani were special guests on the occasion.

On the occasion, Director, NIT Srinagar Prof. (Dr.) Rakesh Sehgal said it is indeed a historic moment that NCC girls unit has been finally sanctioned by our institution.

“Two years ago, we got approval but due to Covid19, it was delayed and could not be taken further forward, then we had restarted the whole process with the help of Honorable LG Manoj Sinha, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir PK Pole, and the support of NCC Headquarters.

Prof. Sehgal said that NCC’s unit has a vacancy of 50 girls and initially 17 cadets have joined the caravan. He apprised the Cadets about the role of NCC in instilling in them the values of character, discipline, selflessness, hard work, and ways to build confidence and gain leadership qualities.

Prof. Sehgal also shared his NCC and NSS journey with the budding cadets and motivated NCC cadets for national unity and integrity. Unless and until we feel attached to our country and institution, we cannot remain happy, he said.

“I am very grateful to Dr. Yashwant Mehta, Dr. Srinibash Mishra, Dr. Nitika Kundan, and others for taking a lead in constantly visiting NCC headquarters to see that the permissions are given for starting this unit,” Prof. Sehgal said.

In his key speech, the Commanding Officer of 1 J&K Girls Battalion, Srinagar, who was Chief Guest on the occasion, said getting NCC’s unit in the institution is the first milestone. He urged cadets to work hard and motivate other students to join the unit.

“If you set an example before them that will automatically motivate others to join NCC. The aim of NCC is to develop confidence, courage, discipline, decorum, and positive attitude among the young minds, which is to be followed in their lives,” he said.

The Commanding Officer said joining NCC is a great opportunity for everyone. We are looking forward for your contribution and participation in NCC activities not only at NIT Srinagar but across the country.

“It is a great opportunity and it takes a lot of courage especially for girls to participate in NCC activities,” he said.  The Chief Guest also shared his vast 30 years of experience in Army with young cadets and urged them to work hard.

Institute’s Registrar, Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari said he said NCC was started by our first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 15th July 1948, with the aim to inculcate the leadership, commandership, and spirit of patriotism in the youth.

“In erstwhile REC Srinagar, there was an NCC unit and it was windup by NCC headquarters due to unfavorable situation in Kashmir,” he said.

Prof. Bukhari said it is our privilege and honor that NCC headquarters has sanctioned the NCC girl’s unit for NIT Srinagar.

Both Dr. Srinibash Mishra, and Dr. Nitika Kundan, were enthusiastic about bringing this unit here. There was full support from both NIT administration and NCC headquarters in setting up this unit here, he said.

“I hope that newly inducted cadets of NCC will be trained in such a way that the mission and vision of NCC will be fulfilled,” Prof. Bukhari said.

A formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Nitika Kundan. She expressed his gratitude to Chief Guest, Director NIT Srinagar Prof. Rakesh Sehgal, Institute’s Registrar Prof. Bukhari, and Prof. MF Wani for their unconditional support in making NCC’s unit a reality on the campus.
