Microsoft has officially announced the shutdown of Skype on May 5, marking the end of its 20-year journey as one of the pioneers in video calling. The decision aligns with Microsoft’s strategy to focus entirely on its all-in-one collaboration platform, Microsoft Teams, which provides expanded features beyond those available in Skype.
In an official statement, Jeff Teper, President of Microsoft 365 Collaborative Apps and Platforms, explained that shifting resources to Teams would enable faster innovation and a unified user experience.
• Skype’s Transition to Teams: Users will receive prompts to migrate their calls and chats to Teams, which offers similar features such as one-on-one calls, group calls, messaging, and file sharing.
• Enhanced Features in Teams: Teams includes advanced tools for hosting meetings, managing calendars, and creating or joining communities—all for free.
• Migration Details: A message found in Skype’s Windows preview states, “Starting in May, Skype will no longer be available. Continue your calls and chats in Teams.”
Microsoft’s decision signals the tech giant’s commitment to consolidating its communication tools under Teams, which has become a central hub for remote work and collaboration.
