Mehbooba Mufti urges police to release protesters detained during Iran protest rallies in Kashmir
SRINAGAR (KIMS) — Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday urged Jammu and Kashmir Police to release people detained during protests in Kashmir over the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In a post on X, the former chief minister said that scores of protesters including women were arrested across Kashmir for peacefully participating in rallies following Khamenei’s killing.
Mufti said the authorities had assured the families of the detainees that they would be released soon, but alleged that the assurances had not been fulfilled.
“Scores of protestors including women have been arrested across Kashmir for peacefully participating at rallies in wake of Ayatollah Ali Khomeini’s martyrdom. Authorities had assured their families that they will be released soon. But unfortunately this hasn’t been the case,” she said.
She urged the police to consider releasing the detainees at the earliest.
Kashmir witnessed massive protests on Sunday following the news of Khamenei’s killing in an airstrike carried out by the United States and Israel.
Following the protests on Sunday, authorities imposed restrictions on the movement of people across the Kashmir Valley. Mobile internet speed was reduced to 2G, while calling services on prepaid SIM cards were also barred as a precautionary measure.
High-speed mobile internet and calling services were restored on Friday evening, while restrictions on the movement of people were lifted on Saturday morning. — (KIMS)
