SRINAGAR (KIMS) — In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday busted a major drug racket in Srinagar district by arresting two drug peddlers and recovering 8 kilograms of heroin.

“A vehicle (Tata Sumo) bearing Registration Number JK05D-1837 was intercepted by a team from Police Post Qamarwari during a routine checkpoint at Barthana Crossing. Upon searching the vehicle, 6 kilograms of heroin were found concealed beneath the driver’s seat. An additional 2 kilograms were recovered during a personal search of the suspects, each concealing 1 kilogram in polythene bags,” police said in a statement.

The suspects, identified as Anas Ajaz Awan, son of Ajaz Ahmad Awan of Dildar Tangdar, Kupwara, and Zahid Ahmad Sheikh, son of Nazir Ahmad Sheikh of Channipora, Tangdar, Kupwara, were arrested. The narcotics and the vehicle used in the commission of crime also have been seized as evidence.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that the recovered narcotics were smuggled from Pakistan as part of a cross-border drug trafficking network,” the statement said.

A case under FIR No. 03/2025 has been registered at Police Station Parimpora under sections 8/21 and 29 of the NDPS Act. Further investigation is going on.

“J&K Police is actively pursuing both backward and forward linkages to dismantle the syndicate and identify all individuals involved in this illicit trade,” the statement added. — (KIMS)
