LG Sinha hints at holding elections in J&K by September this year
Srinagar, Feb 28 : Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha recently hinted at holding Assembly elections in the Union Territory by September this year. He made the remarks during an interview with a national news channel.
Speaking during the interview, Sinha said that as Lok Sabha elections are being held across the country, he believes that Assembly elections in J&K would be held by September this year.
He also said that after the Assembly polls, Statehood to Jammu and Kashmir will also be restored at an appropriate time. “We have given an affidavit in the Supreme Court regarding this,” he said.
While upholding the Centre’s order to abrogate Article 370, a 5-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud on December 11 last year asked the Centre to hold Assembly elections in J&K by September this year.
The court ruled that Article 370 was a temporary provision and the president had the power to revoke it.
The court also directed the Centre to expediate the process of restoring Statehood to Jammu and Kashmir without the Union Territory of Ladakh. (KNS)
