SRINAGAR, Oct 11: Officers of the Jammu and Kashmir Police Service (JKPS) Friday expressed their deep gratitude to the Lieutenant Governor, Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary of the Home Department, and the Director General of Police for leading the much-anticipated restructuring of the JKPS cadre.
This move, as per KPS officers, formalized with the notification of new rules after a seven-year delay, is seen as a major step towards revitalizing the force and recognizing its contributions.
One of the JKPS officials said that KPS officers have consistently been at the forefront of maintaining law and order in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly during periods of massive unrest such as the violent protests of 2008, 2010 and 2016.
The police force played a pivotal role during these crises, often facing severe challenges, including social boycotts, particularly targeting police officers.
Despite these hardships, the commitment of JKPS officers to their duties never wavered.
Several officers have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, with many more sustaining injuries while upholding peace and security in the J&k.
This restructuring, according to the officers, is a long-awaited recognition of their sacrifices and service to the nation.
“The notification of new rules is a progressive step, especially for those of us who have been at the forefront of maintaining order during some of the most difficult times in J&K’s history,” said a senior JKPS officer.
“It not only acknowledges our contributions but also boosts our morale to continue serving with dedication.”
However, the JKPS officers also pointed out some ongoing concerns. In recent years, stagnation within the force has led to dissatisfaction. Previously, the quota for promotion from JKPS to IPS was set at 67, but it was reduced to 38, limiting opportunities for career advancement. This frustration was highlighted recently when KPS officer Mohan Lal resigned from the police force and announced his decision to contest elections, citing dissatisfaction with the stagnation in the department.
Despite these challenges, the recent cadre restructuring has been viewed as a positive step that will encourage officers to push forward with renewed vigor.
“This restructuring is a much-needed change. It not only recognizes our past efforts but also gives us hope for a more dynamic future,” an officer remarked.
The JKPS officers reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring peace and security in Jammu and Kashmir, promising to continue standing at the forefront in protecting the nation and its people.
The recognition from the administration, they said, serves as a powerful motivator to fulfill their mission with even greater resolve.
