‘India is becoming the theatre of the absurd’: Chidambaram, farmers’ union condemn Disha Ravi’s arrest

New Delhi: Congress leader P Chidamabaram and Samkyukta Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of 40 farmers unions, condemned the arrest of climate activist Disha Ravi and demanded her immediate release.

Taking to his Twitter, Chidambaram said that the Indian state must be standing on very shaky foundations if a 22-year-old student of Mount Carmel College and a climate activist, has become a threat to the nation.

Taking a dig at the Centre, the former home minister termed the ‘took kit’ to support the farmers’ protest more dangerous than the intrusion by Chinese troops into Indian territory.

‘The Indian state must be standing on very shaky foundations’

“I strongly condemn the arrest of Disha Ravi and urge all students and youth to raise their voices to protest against the authoritarian regime,” he said.

“She stood in support of the farmers. We demand her immediate unconditional release,” SKM said in the statement.

Disa was arrested by the Cyber Cell of Delhi Police from Bengaluru and was brought to the national capital for her role in the toolkit document case.

Ravi had allegedly shared the toolkit related to the farmer’s protest against the Centre’s three farm laws with Swedish teen climate change campaigner Greta Thunberg.

According to the Delhi Police, she was an editor of the “toolkit Google doc” and a “key conspirator” in the document’s formulation and dissemination.

‘Disha collaborated with pro-Khalistan group Poetic Justice Foundation’

She and others collaborated with pro-Khalistani Poetic Justice Foundation to spread disaffection against the Indian State, the police alleged.

Earlier today, students in Bengaluru organised a symbolic protest in support of Disha.

In a video circulated on social media, a protester handed over saplings to a police officer and asked how she was allowed to arrest by Delhi police without informing Bengaluru police.

Meanwhile, Duty Metropolitan Magistrate Dev Saroha of Patiala House Courts Complex has allowed Delhi Police to quiz Disha Ravi for five days.
