Imran Riaz Khan Reveals Disturbing Ordeal During Detention: Pressured by Authorities for Compromising Video

Limya Mahajan

In a startling revelation, renowned Pakistani journalist Imran Riaz Khan has claimed that he was pressured by authorities to make a compromising video in exchange for his release during his detention earlier this year. In an interview, Khan disclosed that while in custody, a man approached him and made a disturbing offer: “We have brought two girls. Make a video with them, and then we will release you.”

Khan, who is known for his critical views on the Pakistani government and military, was arrested on May 11, 2023, under murky circumstances while travelling in Pakistan. His sudden disappearance, believed to be linked to his outspoken criticism of state institutions, raised serious concerns about his safety. Many feared for his life, with widespread reports suggesting mistreatment or even the possibility of death while in custody. International organizations, including Amnesty International, expressed their alarm and demanded a transparent investigation into Khan’s case.

After more than four months of enforced disappearance, Imran Riaz Khan was recovered and reunited with his family in September 2023. However, his ordeal did not end there. He was rearrested on February 23, 2024, raising further alarms about the ongoing suppression of journalists and dissenters in the country. During his most recent detention, Khan’s shocking claim surfaced, where he implicated a general from the Pakistan Army in making the vile offer for his release.

This revelation comes at a time when Pakistan’s government is already facing intense scrutiny over its treatment of the opposition, particularly regarding allegations of mistreatment of members and supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. The arrest and alleged abuse of journalists, critics, and dissenters have prompted human rights organizations to call for accountability.

The ongoing concerns surrounding enforced disappearances and the stifling of free speech continue to haunt the current administration, further inflaming political tensions in the country. The situation underscores the challenges faced by Pakistan’s media in holding those in power accountable, as threats against journalists become more brazen.

Imran Riaz Khan’s disturbing allegations have shocked the nation and the international community, raising crucial questions about the extent of abuse of power within Pakistan’s political and military elite.
