IHPL Controversy: Hotelier Mushtaq Chayya Confirms Legal Action, Awaits Strong Response
Srinagar, Nov 5 (KNC): Mushtaq Chayya, owner of the Radisson Hotel Srinagar, on Wednesday criticised the organisers of the Indian Heaven Premier League (IHPL) after the tournament was cancelled and its organisers reportedly fled, leaving unpaid bills and accusations of fraud.
Speaking to media persons, Chayya, as per news agency Kashmir News Corner (KNC), said, “We were told a big, reputable company was coming to give our children a platform to showcase their talent.”
“Many outside cricketers had come. We had high hopes, but later it was a big disappointment. They have ruined their own credibility. What could we do? They have taken our money, money belonging to vendors, to the children, to hoteliers. In particular, our funds are now with them,” he added.
Chayya said he has lodged a complaint and expects legal action. “We have reported the matter to the police and they are on it. Let’s see what happens, Insha’Allah,” he said.
On the recovery of funds, Chayya said, “The police have assured us they are in touch with the organisers. Our management was also in constant communication, and the organisers kept promising that the money would be returned either today or tomorrow. Once the funds are recovered, I will update everyone,” he said.
Police have launched an investigation after complaints from players, hotels and vendors who say they were left unpaid following the abrupt cancellation of the league.
It is important to mention that among the international stars invited were West Indies legend Chris Gayle and New Zealand’s Jesse Ryder, adding glamour and global attention to the event.
The tournament, which began on October 25, was scheduled to run until November 9, featuring eight teams and over 70 players, umpires and support staff.
Accommodation was arranged at Hotel Radisson Collection, Rajbagh, with assurances that all expenses would be covered. However, on the morning of November 2, the organisers reportedly vanished without settling dues. Radisson Collection claims it is owed Rs 51 lakh, while total unpaid dues across vendors and staff remain unknown. (KNC)
