IED attacks on the rise in worrisome trend in Jammu-Kashmir

Srinagar: A major tragedy was averted on Monday morning when an improvised explosive device or IED was found and defused in Nowgam area of Srinagar city. The spot where the explosive was placed was in close proximity to the rail track.

On an increase in the use of IEDs by terrorists, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir range Vijay Kumar said, “Militants change their modus operandi every year. Last year, they were attacking naka parties, and this year, IEDs are being used. But we are also ready to deal with this.”

“The militant who was arrested in Jammu, Hidayatullah, confessed that there is a local militant from Bijbehara who is an IED expert. The recent blast in Pazalpora of Bijbehara was carried out by him. We will arrest him soon,” IG Vijay Kumar said.

On February 16, an explosion had rocked Pazalpora area of Bijbehara in South Kashmir. The bomb went off near a CRPF patrol party. Officials said terrorists had detonated an IED, hidden in a dumper, by a remote-controlled device. However, no one was injured in the blast.

Another major tragedy was averted when the Jammu and Kashmir Police when an IED weighing 6-6.5 kilogram was recovered from the Jammu bus stand.

In January, a soldier was killed and three others injured in an IED explosion at Kulgam in South Kashmir.

The explosion took place inside a school in the Shamshipura area when a road opening party of the Army was carrying out a sanitisation drill. (Agency)
