Heavy Rain Breaks Heat Spell In Kashmir

Srinagar: A short spell of heavy rain in the late afternoon on Thursday turned air a lot cooler than the last few weeks of heat and humidity in Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir valley, while strong winds and hail inflicted damage to trees and crops in a few other areas beyond Srinagar.

A Met Department spokesman said there was 0.6 mm rainfall in Srinagar this afternoon resulting in a drop in the temperature.

The weather turned pleasant providing much relief to people who were facing hot and humid conditions.

Meanwhile high winds followed by hail hit several parts of north Kashmir on Thursday evening.

The fast moving wind uprooted several poplar trees on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway, disrupting the traffic movement on the road.

According to reports, Narbal, Magam, Mirgund and its adjoining villages in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district witnessed fast moving winds followed by hail.

Several structures in these areas are reported to have suffered minor damage.

A Met department spokesman said here that light to moderate rain could occur in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday and Sunday.

During the next 24 hours there could be isolated light rain in the state, he said. (GK)
