Government to Ban Online Games; Dream11 Under Spotlight

Srinagar, August 22:

The government has reportedly decided to impose a complete ban on online gaming platforms across the country, citing concerns over addiction, financial losses, and rising complaints from the public. Among the leading platforms under scrutiny is Dream11, one of the most popular fantasy sports applications in India, which is now facing a possible shutdown.

According to initial reports, several users of Dream11 have already started experiencing restrictions while accessing the app. Many players claim they are unable to join contests or play matches since last evening, indicating that the ban may already be taking effect.

Officials have not yet issued an official circular, but sources confirm that the decision to ban online games has been finalized and will be implemented from tonight. The move is expected to cover all real-money gaming platforms, fantasy sports, and other online contests.

The decision has sparked a heated debate among citizens, with many appreciating the government’s step to curb online gaming addiction.

  • “These apps were eating up students’ time and money. Banning them is a good decision for our younger generation,” said Aamir Ahmad, a college lecturer.
  • “Dream11 was creating financial losses for youth who kept investing in hopes of winning. This move will save families from unnecessary stress,” said Shabnam, a mother of two.

However, some frequent users of Dream11 expressed disappointment.

  • “For us, it was entertainment and a chance to test cricket knowledge. Instead of a complete ban, the government should regulate it,” said Faisal Khan, a fantasy cricket player.

Dream11, launched in 2008, has grown into the largest fantasy sports platform in India, partnering with major cricket tournaments, including the Indian Premier League (IPL). Millions of users participate in creating virtual teams to win cash rewards.

With the government’s move, Dream11 now faces one of its toughest challenges, and its operations in India may come to a halt if the ban is enforced.

Industry experts believe this ban will have a huge impact on India’s multi-billion-rupee online gaming sector. While the government maintains the step is in the larger public interest, online gamers and companies are awaiting official notification and clarity on whether there will be a blanket ban or selective restrictions.
