Srinagar, Sept 7: Ghulam Hassan Mir, a senior leader of the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party, has called on all political parties in the region to set aside their differences and unite in the fight for the restoration of J&K’s statehood, before focusing on government formation.
Speaking on a talk show hosted by ANN News, Mir stressed that without statehood, any elected government in Jammu and Kashmir would lack real power. “Political parties in J&K should focus on pushing for the restoration of statehood before thinking about forming a government. Without statehood, the Assembly will be like a toothless tiger,” he said.
Mir pointed out that both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah had previously assured the people of Jammu and Kashmir that statehood would be restored, and he urged local political leaders to work together to hold them to that promise. He believes unity among all political factions is critical for achieving the goal of statehood, regardless of who ultimately forms the government in the future.
As the debate around statehood intensifies, Mir’s call for political unity comes at a pivotal time. He argued that the return of statehood is necessary for any popular government to effectively serve the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The issue of statehood has been at the forefront of political discourse in the region ever since the revocation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the former state into two Union Territories in August 2019. Mir’s remarks reflect the growing sentiment among J&K’s political class that a return to full statehood is essential for meaningful governance and empowerment of the people.
