Former MLA, BJP Leader Satkar Kaur Arrested in Heroin Bust, Sparking Political Shockwaves
Former Ferozepur Rural MLA Satkar Kaur Gehri has been arrested by the Punjab Police’s Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) along with her nephew, Jaskeerat Singh, for allegedly attempting to sell 100 grams of heroin near Sunny Enclave in Kharar.
Satkar Kaur, who was elected as a Congress MLA in 2017, switched to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2022 after being denied a ticket by Congress for re-election. The arrest has sparked controversy due to her political background and raises serious concerns about drug trafficking involvement at high levels.
According to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sukhchain Singh Gill, Jaskeerat Singh, who is a native of Behbal Khurd village in Ferozepur, was driving the car at the time of the arrest, while Satkar Kaur was in the passenger seat. The police apprehended them after intercepting their vehicle and seizing the heroin they were allegedly attempting to sell.
The arrest of a former lawmaker involved in drug trafficking further fuels concerns about the growing drug menace in Punjab, a state already grappling with high addiction rates. Satkar Kaur’s arrest is likely to have political ramifications as well, given her switch from Congress to the BJP, and the BJP may face increased scrutiny due to the involvement of one of its leaders in such a serious crime. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are awaited.
