ECI orders special summary revision of electoral rolls in J&K

 

 Srinagar, June 21(KNS): Election Commission of India (ECI)has ordered special summary revision of electoral rolls in the Union Territory in Jammu & Kashmir and other three states where polls are scheduled to be held this year.

“… It is to state that the election to the legislative assembly in your state is due to be held later this year and section 21(2) of the Representation of Peoples Act, 1950 provides that the electoral shall be revised with reference to the qualifying date before each general election to the Legislative Assembly of a state,”reads the letter sent to J&K chief electoral officer by the ECI.

“Accordingly, to maximize the registration of all eligible citizens, who are attaining the age of 18 years on or before Ist July 2024 and with the purpose of improving health of the electoral roll, the Commission has decided to carry out second summary revision of photo electoral rolls w.r.t 01.07. 2024 as the qualifying date in your state,”  it added.

According to ECI communication the
revision exercise would start on July 25 and end on August 20.

Notably, the pre-revision activities in J&K and three states would be from June 25 to July 24.

A day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Srinagar said  that preparations to hold assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) have begun, and that the day is near when statehood will be restored to the Union Territory.

It may be recalled that Supreme Court had earlier said that holding that direct elections to legislative assemblies “cannot be put on hold” until statehood is restored and had directed the Election Commission to conduct J&K elections by September 30, 2024.(KNS)
