Construction of unauthorized structures come down in Srinagar municipal areas: reveals official records

Srinagar, April 26: The complaints of unauthorized and illegal constructions have gone down in Srinagar municipal areas, reveals official data.

These constructions have gone down after authorities at Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) took strict measures under law including special demolition drives in the city.

The apparent change can be seen in West Zone of Srinagar where the SMC besides taking action under law against unauthorized constructions to also encourage people to apply for building construction permissions under the procedure laid down by law.

“The unauthorized and illegal constructions in Srinagar municipal areas have come down especially in West Zone where recently a young Enforcement Officer took over,” said an official.

Shahid Issrar was recently posted as Enforcement Officer to the West Zone in addition to his own duties.

“The officer besides taking up special drives against unauthorized constrictions is also encouraging people to apply for building construction permissions. He also makes them aware about the procedure for applying online,” said an official.

SMC has been conducting demolition drives in several areas of the city including Ranger Stop Khanyar, Khushalsar, Cement Kadal Bridge, Hagi bagh  Buchpora, Kadi Kadal and other areas.

The Task force team that have been constituted to check and verify illegal/ unauthorized construction and  accordingly compile the report for initiation of necessary action in each case are visiting different areas zone wise each day and inspecting all the structures coming up at different places to see the building permissions and check deviations. 

“On finding deviations in sanctioned building permissions and the illegal structures that  are being found are getting  demolished constantly,” said an official. 

Commissioner SMC Athar Amir Khan has strictly passed on directions to the Task Force teams that the photographic and video evidence before and after the demolition/ removal covering all sides of the illegal construction shall be annexed with a report of each and every such construction demolition undertaken in accordance with law.
