CIK Cracks Down on Terror Network Masquerading as Social Activism Across Kashmir

Srinagar: In a major counter-terror operation, Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) on Tuesday busted a covert terror-linked network that was operating under the façade of social activism and civil society work across multiple districts of Kashmir.

Acting on credible intelligence inputs, CIK conducted coordinated searches at 12 locations in Srinagar, Baramulla, Anantnag, Pulwama, Kupwara, Budgam and Shopian. The operation was carried out in connection with FIR No. 03/2023 registered at Police Station CIK Srinagar under Sections 505 and 153-A of the IPC and Sections 13 and 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The searches were conducted after obtaining due authorization from the Hon’ble Court of the Special Judge designated under the NIA Act, Srinagar.

According to officials, the investigation revealed that certain individuals were misusing platforms linked to mass media, social media, human rights advocacy, environmental causes and women empowerment to carry out activities detrimental to the sovereignty, integrity and security of India. These platforms were allegedly being used as cover to spread anti-national propaganda and sustain a terror-support ecosystem.

CIK said discreet verification established suspected links of these individuals with secessionist groups and banned terrorist organisations. Investigators further found that some of the suspects were allegedly in direct contact with Pakistan-based terror handlers through encrypted communication applications.

The accused are suspected to have been involved in peddling false narratives, glorifying terrorism and terrorists, radicalising vulnerable youth and systematically attempting to disturb public order and peace in Jammu and Kashmir.

During the operation, 12 suspects were detained for questioning. Security forces seized a significant quantity of incriminating digital material, including 10 mobile phones, one laptop and 14 SIM cards. All seized devices have been sent for detailed forensic analysis.

Officials said the operation has dismantled a dangerous covert network that was exploiting the credibility of social causes to push terror agendas. The seized digital evidence is expected to expose deeper layers of the conspiracy, and more arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.

CIK stated that the probe is ongoing to identify other conspirators and associates and to uncover the complete communication chain linking local operatives with terror-secessionist handlers operating from across the border.

Reiterating its firm resolve, CIK warned that misuse of democratic spaces and social platforms to promote terrorism will not be tolerated under any circumstances. The agency has urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure peace and security in the Union Territory.
