Apni Party Workers Lash Out at Voters After Altaf Bukhari’s Defeat in Chanapora

ANN NEWS DESH

Srinagar, October 9, 2024 — The unexpected defeat of Altaf Bukhari, leader of the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP), in the Chanapora Assembly seat has ignited frustration among party workers, some of whom have openly accused voters of betrayal. Bukhari, who had confidently anticipated a strong win in the constituency, was defeated in a stunning result that has further weakened the already beleaguered party.

Bukhari’s loss has dealt a severe blow to the party, which has been grappling with internal dissent, defections, and a diminishing base of support. The fallout from the defeat has been swift, with party workers lashing out at the electorate, alleging that they had been “cheated” despite expectations of victory. The anger underscores the depth of disappointment within the party, which was banking on Bukhari’s win to revive its political fortunes.

Once seen as a rising force in Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape, the Apni Party has struggled to shake off accusations of being a “B-Team” of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a label that has alienated many voters. This election result further fuels the perception that the party is out of step with the aspirations of the people.

Despite exit polls predicting a difficult path ahead for Bukhari, his defeat in the Chanapora seat still came as a shock. The election, held after a decade-long hiatus, was expected to offer a platform for Bukhari to strengthen his political foothold. However, the rejection by voters marks a turning point in the region’s political dynamics, as many see this as a reflection of the electorate’s disillusionment with Bukhari’s leadership and the Apni Party’s platform.

Political analysts believe this defeat highlights a growing disconnect between the Apni Party and the people. “The voters have exercised their democratic right to choose leaders who align with their needs and aspirations. Bukhari’s defeat shows that the electorate is looking for change,” said a political observer.

Adding to the party’s woes, its Vice President, G.H. Mir, also suffered a major defeat in his traditionally strong seat of Tangmarg. Mir, who had enjoyed consistent electoral success in the past, saw voters turn to a different candidate, signaling a broader dissatisfaction with the Apni Party’s leadership.

The twin defeats of Bukhari and Mir raise serious questions about the future of the Apni Party. Once expected to secure at least three seats in the current election, the party’s dismal performance suggests that it may be facing an existential crisis. With disillusionment growing among grassroots workers, the leadership faces increasing pressure to reflect on its strategies and reconnect with the electorate.

For now, the Apni Party finds itself at a critical juncture. Whether it will undertake a serious introspection or continue down its current path remains to be seen. However, the electorate has sent a strong message, and the party’s ability to respond to this new political reality will determine its future relevance in Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape.
