Advisory for Driving in Snow on Plain and Hill Roads in Kashmir

Driving in snow-covered conditions requires extra caution due to reduced traction and visibility. Follow these guidelines to ensure safety:
General Tips for All Roads
1. leave early-always ensure Pre Driving Check of Your Vehicle:
• Ensure your vehicle is equipped with snow tires or chains if you drive in Hilly Roads.
• Keep the windshield washer fluid and wipers functional.
• Verify that the brakes, battery, and lights are in good condition.
2. Drive Cautiously:
• Reduce speed to maintain better control of the vehicle.
• Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns to prevent skidding.
• Maintain a safe distance (at least double the normal) from the vehicle ahead.
3. Visibility:
• Use fog lights and low beams during snowfall.
• Ensure the windshield and mirrors are clear of snow before starting.
4. Emergency Kit:
• Carry a snow shovel, first aid kit, flashlight, blankets, water, and non-perishable food items.
Special Guidelines for Hill Roads
1. Gear Control:
• Use lower gears while climbing or descending to avoid slipping.
• Avoid over-revving in icy patches.
2. Chains for Tires:
• Use tire chains for better grip on steep, snowy terrains.
3. Corners and Turns:
• Approach curves slowly and widen your turning angle.
• Use the horn to alert other vehicles, especially on blind turns.
4. Avoid Overloading:
• Ensure the vehicle is not overloaded as it may affect traction and control.
Safety Precautions for Severe Weather
• Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy snowfall or road closure advisories.
• Follow instructions issued by the Traffic Police and the Disaster Management Authorities.
• Regularly check updates from the Traffic police Control Room Kashmir for road conditions and blockages.
