As govt fails in felling down Russian poplars, pollen allergy giving tough time to people

As the government has failed to fell down female Russia poplar trees across the Kashmir Valley, the region has been gripped under pollen-induced allergies, giving tough time to locals.

Locals told Kashmir News Service that the pollen-induced allergies have been given them tough time as roads, streets and corners in Srinagar city and other major towns particularly Anantnag, Baramulla and Kupwara are filler pollens.

They urged the administration to take appropriate measures in felling down these Russian poplars so that they can heave a sigh of relief.

Meanwhile, experts said that the common symptoms of pollen-induced allergy include nasal irritation, running nose and red and watery eyes, which may further exacerbate if proper medical advice is not sought by the affected persons.

Dr Showkat Ahmad Wani, a noted physician said that the symptoms range from nasal irritation or burning, watery eyes coupled with redness and skin rashes.

He said that these symptoms may further exacerbate in patients having Asthma, in which a person’s airways become inflamed, narrow and swell and produce extra mucus, which makes it difficult to breathe.

“The patients suffering from allergies are advised precautionary measures like wearing masks, medicines include anti-allergic tablets and in case the infection is high then anti-biotic is prescribed,” he added.

Notably, in 2015, the High Court had passed directions banning plantation and trade of pollen producing poplar trees particularly Russian poplars across the Kashmir Valley.

However, the government has miserably failed in stopping the perennial health hazard by cutting down these trees. (KNS)
