J&K High Court Lawyers Call for Nationwide Protest Against Supreme Court’s Bar Quota Verdict
The Jammu & Kashmir High Court Bar Association, Jammu (JKHCBAJ), has called for a nationwide protest against the Supreme Court ruling that allows judicial officers with seven years of prior practice as lawyers to be appointed as district judges under the Bar quota.
The association said the judgment carries “serious and far-reaching consequences” for the legal profession. It urged Bar bodies across the country to stand together to protect advocates’ rights and ensure that the Bar quota remains strictly for practicing lawyers.
The JKHCBAJ argued that any dilution of the quota undermines the purpose for which it was created and weakens the independence of the Bar. The association has asked all state and district bar councils to support the protest and press for a review of the decision.
The call for collective action reflects growing concern among lawyers who believe the ruling blurs the line between the Bar and the judiciary, affecting opportunities for practicing advocates.
