Fact-Check: Nowgam Explosion Was an Accident, Not a Terror Attack

A powerful explosion late last night inside Nowgam Police Station has been confirmed as an accidental blast caused during the handling of seized ammonium nitrate. The incident occurred around 11:20 PM while officials were conducting a routine examination of confiscated explosive material.

 

 

 

Security agencies have ruled out any terror angle. There was no infiltration, no targeted strike and no sign of coordinated militant activity.

 

 

 

The blast happened within the premises during material inspection, making it a tragic operational accident.

 

 

 

Fresh details confirm that nine people were killed and 29 others injured in the explosion. Officials say the blast occurred while teams were extracting samples from a large cache of explosives recently seized during the investigation of a white-collar terror module.

 

 

A senior security official told ANN News that the material being examined had been brought from Faridabad, Haryana and was part of the 360 kilograms of explosives recovered from the rented residence of arrested doctor Muzammil Ganaie, who remains under investigation. Policemen and forensic experts were processing this material when the blast occurred.

 

 

Nine bodies have been retrieved from the site, and efforts are underway to establish their identities.

 

 

 

All 29 injured personnel have been shifted to hospital for treatment. Support for affected families and injured staff remains a priority.

 

 

 

 

Authorities emphasise the need for clarity as some online handles are already misrepresenting the incident as an “attack,” creating unnecessary panic.

 

 

 

 

Officials say the focus must remain on a proper investigation into procedural lapses, strengthening handling protocols for seized explosives and countering misinformation with verified facts.
