Former J&K Cooperative MD Sent to Jail for Faking Age to Stay in Service Beyond Retirement

Srinagar | The Economic Offences Wing (Crime Branch Kashmir) has secured a major conviction in a long-running forgery case against Mohammad Shafi Banday, former Managing Director of J&K Cooperative Central Land Development Limited, for altering his date of birth to unlawfully extend his government service.

Banday had recorded his date of birth as 01-09-1939 instead of his actual year of birth, 1934, by submitting a forged certificate. Investigation later confirmed that his real date of birth was 26-06-1932, exposing the manipulation.

The probe revealed that he overstayed in service by more than seven years, causing financial loss to the state and gaining undue benefits for himself. Following verification, a case was registered and a chargesheet was filed before the court.

After a full trial, the Court of City Judge Srinagar convicted Banday under Sections 420, 468 and 471 of the Ranbir Penal Code. He has been sentenced to two years of simple imprisonment on each count along with a fine of ₹5,000 per offence. All sentences will run concurrently.

The EOW said the order reinforces its resolve to uphold transparency and fairness in public institutions and to take firm action against corruption and fraud in government offices.
