Australia Formally Recognises the State of Palestine

Canberra, September 21, 2025 – In a landmark move, the Commonwealth of Australia has officially recognised the independent and sovereign State of Palestine. The announcement was made today in a joint statement issued by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong, marking a historic shift in Australia’s foreign policy.

Australia’s recognition comes alongside similar moves by Canada and the United Kingdom as part of a coordinated international effort to advance the two-state solution. The statement emphasised that this recognition reflects Australia’s long-standing commitment to peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.

“Effective today, Australia recognises the legitimate and long-held aspirations of the people of Palestine to a state of their own,” the statement read. It also highlighted that this step is aimed at creating new momentum towards a peaceful settlement, beginning with a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attacks.

The statement noted that the international community has laid out specific requirements for the Palestinian Authority. Among them are commitments to democratic governance, financial reforms, improved education, and a clear rejection of terrorist groups, including Hamas.

“The terrorist organisation Hamas must have no role in Palestine,” the Australian leaders stressed, while confirming that the President of the Palestinian Authority has reaffirmed recognition of Israel’s right to exist.

Australia further stated that the establishment of full diplomatic relations, including the opening of embassies, will be considered as the Palestinian Authority demonstrates progress in reforms.

The joint statement also highlighted the importance of rebuilding Gaza, strengthening the capacity of the Palestinian state, and ensuring Israel’s security. It underscored the vital role of the Arab League and the United States in shaping a credible peace plan for the region.

Australia pledged to continue working with international partners to ensure the recognition leads to lasting peace and stability. “This is not just a hope, but a right for all humanity,” the statement concluded.
