Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Urges Youth to Embrace Entrepreneurship with Honesty

Tourism will be back on track in J&K: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq

Srinagar | May 29, 2025  — Prominent religious and socio-political leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has called upon the youth of Jammu and Kashmir to embrace entrepreneurship as a path to empowerment and societal upliftment, stressing the importance of self-reliance, education, and cultural preservation.

Addressing a gathering in Srinagar, Mirwaiz highlighted the need to look beyond traditional career aspirations and focus on building local industries with honesty and dedication. “Our youth have talent and potential. They must step into sectors like tourism, horticulture, handicrafts, and business with hard work and integrity,” he said.

He noted that while tourism remains a vital economic pillar, sectors like agriculture and horticulture must not be neglected. He also stressed the importance of reviving traditional Kashmiri crafts such as shawls and carpets, calling them “unique brands built over generations” that represent the cultural identity of the region. “These industries are not just sources of income but symbols of our legacy. We must protect them,” he added.

Mirwaiz expressed concern over the rising mental health challenges among the youth, including depression, drug addiction, and psychiatric issues, which he said are deeply interconnected with unemployment and lack of direction. “These problems are not isolated—they stem from broader economic and social gaps,” he said.

He also raised the issue of educational infrastructure, pointing out that many students are forced to leave the region due to the lack of local colleges and universities. “If the private sector comes forward and invests in education, it can help shape a brighter future for our youth.”

Calling for a balance between modern progress and Islamic values, Mirwaiz emphasized that any step toward economic or social advancement must remain grounded in ethical principles. “Our religion guides us to act within permissible bounds. Progress must come without compromising our moral and cultural identity.”

Mirwaiz concluded with an appeal to the youth: “Whatever path you choose—be it business, art, or agriculture—do it with honesty, hard work, and a sense of responsibility. That is how we can build a strong and self-reliant Jammu and Kashmir.” (KNS)
