Srinagar, Jan 7: In the first week of 2025, Kashmir witnessed 41 fire incidents, with 9 of these reported from Srinagar, according to officials from the Fire and Emergency Services Department.
Assistant Director of Fire and Emergency Services Kashmir, Er. Aqib Hussain Mir, while talking with ANN News said that the majority of these incidents were caused by the extensive use of heating devices. “Many people overlook the quality of heating gadgets when making purchases. It’s critical to choose reliable brands and turn off devices during the night. Ensuring the use of quality products can significantly reduce risks,” he advised.
Aqib also noted that fire safety awareness has been a priority for the department. “In 2024 alone, we organized over 4,000 awareness programs. Following the major fire incident in Warwan, Kishtwar, a department meeting identified more than 300 remote villages where fire services are unable to reach,” he said.
Discussing operational challenges, he highlighted issues such as congestion and improper parking that obstruct fire service vehicles. “When a fire is reported, we assess the area for structural risks and access. However, vehicles parked on narrow roads often delay our response. Cooperation from the public is vital to avoid such obstacles,” Aqib explained.
He further emphasized the vulnerability of wooden structures to fires and urged residents to take proactive measures. “Using fire extinguishers can make a significant difference. The public is the first line of defense until fire services arrive,” he added.
The department continues to stress the importance of safety measures and community awareness to mitigate fire risks in the region.
