Pakistani Court Issues Controversial Verdict in Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi’s ‘Un-Islamic’ Marriage Case

Islamabad, February 3 :  Pakistani court sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to seven years in prison with a fine of Rs 0.5 million each in the ‘un-Islamic’ marriage case. This marks the third sentencing for Imran Khan within a week, adding to his legal challenges.

The case, filed by Bushra Bibi’s first husband, Khawar Maneka, alleges that Bushra violated the Islamic practice of observing the mandatory pause, or Iddat, between two marriages, and accused her and Imran Khan of having an adulterous relationship before their marriage.

Maryam Riaz, the sister of Bushra Bibi, claimed during the trial that Khawar Manika subjected her sister to mental and physical torture, leading Bushra Bibi to seek solace in religion. Despite presenting evidence supporting their innocence, the court handed down what some are calling a prejudiced decision.

The court session included the playback of a video featuring Mufti Saeed, who officiated the marriage, stating the finality of a woman’s testimony in Islamic law. However, questions arose about the authenticity of his statements, creating a stir in the courtroom.

Critics argue that the decision is biased and shameful, with Imran Khan’s political opponents, including Maryam Nawaz, attempting to exploit the situation. The hearing, held within Adiala jail in Rawalpindi, was presided over by Senior Civil Judge Qudratullah.

Imran and Bushra, represented by Advocate Salman Akram Raja and Advocate Osman Riaz Gul, submitted a joint statement answering 13 questions. The defense’s plea for additional witnesses and jurisdictional pleas were rejected.

After the verdict, Imran Khan’s party, PTI, declared the trial shameful, emphasizing the private nature of the allegations. PTI Chairman Barrister Gauhar Khan announced their intent to challenge the judgment in the high court, claiming that recent verdicts against Imran are politically motivated.

Despite the legal setbacks, Imran Khan urged his supporters to remain calm and peaceful, emphasizing his commitment to the cause. As the controversy unfolds, the nation watches closely, grappling with the implications of a decision that has polarized public opinion.
