7 FIRs lodged against people involved in various online crimes

Srinagar: Cyber Police Kashmir on Sunday said that it arrested two persons in connection with spreading fake information on social media.

The cyber police said that they received information through reliable sources that some miscreants with criminal intention and to create panic amongst public have circulated fake information/videos having bearing on law and order on social media platforms.

“It was learnt that the miscreants are circulating photographs of militants of prescribed militant organization on social media and networking sites in order to provoke the masses and cause disaffection against the country. The said actions have been undertaken by these miscreants in order to mislead the public in general and youth in particular” they said.

The added that “accordingly, a case FIR No. 05/2020 under relevant sections of law stands registered in Cyber Police Station, Kashmir Zone, Srinagar and investigation set into motion. 02 miscreants (names withheld) have been arrested in the instant case”.

“General public is advised not to circulate unauthentic and fake information through social media platforms. Any person found indulging in such activities will be dealt with strictly under law”.

It is to mention here that Police’s cyber cell had traced and identified dozens of fake account handles that were involved in series of “online crimes” including impersonating and forgery.”

The cyber cell’s action comes close on the heels of government spokesman Rohit Kansal’s tweet on Friday morning that a similar account to that of his official twitter handle has been created on social media by some people and they were spreading fake messages.

Sources told ET that cyber police have identified three types of people involved in social crimes that include impersonation-a person impersonating as a J&K government official and spreading wrong information to cheat others.

A few days back, orders suggesting restoration of 4-G service with the signatures similar to J&K Home Secretary Shaleen Kabra were making rounds on social media. Later it was found that the order was fake.

Sources said that seven FIRs have already been lodged against the people involved in various online crimes.
